Municipal elections Tuesday for Alabama

(WTVM)- Voters in Alabama will head to the polls on Tuesday to cast ballots in municipal elections.

Mayoral seats in Phenix City, Eufaula, Valley and Notasulga are up for grabs along with other positions. Opelika and Lannett will also be voting to fill elected positions.

Second arrest made in pizza delivery robbery

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM)- Phenix City Police arrested a second teen on Friday in connection with the pizza delivery man robbery and kidnapping.

They arrested a 15-year-old boy at his home on 4th Place South around 11 a.m. He is charged with theft, kidnapping, robbery and assault.

The third suspect is a 15-year-old boy. He has not been officially charged because he was picked up in Opelika days after the robbery on unrelated charges to the Papa John's incident.

Storybook Farm: Providing Hope on Horseback Part 2

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM)- Meet Keara and Padraig.

This talented brother and sister duo are two participants at the Storybook Farm in Opelika and share a love for horses.

"Everybody is really nice and it's so much fun to ride the horses. This is where I learned to ride a horse," explains Storybook Farm participant, Keara Harris.

Keara, 13, has been coming to the Storybook for four years and riding has become another pastime added to her long list of hobbies.

DOJ to monitor municipal elections in Lanett, Phenix City

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM)- The Justice Department announced it will monitor municipal elections Tuesday Aug. 28 in Lanett, Reform and Phenix City to ensure compliance with the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

The Justice Department said it is assigning federal observers to polling places in the three towns.

The Voting Rights Act prohibits discrimination in elections based on race, color or membership in a minority language group. The Justice Department said people can file complaints about discriminatory voting practices by calling toll free 1-800-253-3931.

West Central Georgia Red Cross ready for Isaac

(WTVM)- Half of the nationwide Red Cross fleet of emergency vehicles are on alert to respond to the effects of Isaac all along the Gulf Coast.

Locally, the West Central Georgia Chapter has 20 volunteers on standby to deploy to impacted areas if necessary. 

The Red Cross is also communicating with Musocgee County EMA in the event shelter is needed for evacuees.

Man pleads guilty in 2008 slaying

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- A Columbus man has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to killing a Fort Mitchell woman.

Clyde H. Friend, 54, entered the plea in Russell County Court rather than face a trial in the 2008 death of Tiffany Fulmar. 

Friend could have faced the death penalty if found guilty by a jury.

Hands Across the Border unites Ga., Ala. officials to keep roads safe

(WTVM)- Law enforcement officials from throughout Georgia and Alabama gathered in Columbus on Monday to help kick off this year's Hands Across the Border.

This is the twenty-first year that Georgia has partnered with law enforcement from all bordering states to keep the roads safe during the busy Labor Day weekend.

Officials say there will be checkpoints for drivers throughout this week.
